Dear friends, 


My sister-in-law, Eileen, always said Halloween was the official start of home heating season. No matter how cold it got before then, they held out.


We aspired to do the same at our house, but every year we failed.


This year, we’re making another attempt — layered in hats, wool socks and wrapped in blankets, pretending it’s not cold.


We look ridiculous.

Telstar boys soccer is inching ever closer to a playoff berth. Bethel Citizen writing intern Evan Parsons, a Telstar senior, interviewed team captains Cyrus Mills and Connor Deprey, who along with Coach Nik Conrad have set their sights on redemption after last year's first round loss.


Hanover residents voted affirmatively on all the articles on their Oct. 14 town meeting warrant at the Town House on Howard Pond Road.


West Paris has until Nov. 15 to notify Maine School Administrative District 17 if it intends to reacquire Agnes Gray Elementary School at a cost of $10,350. A public hearing for residents' input will be held Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Town Office on Kingsbury Street.

Tomorrow is Community Day at Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, 99 Main Street, Bethel. Free admission for Maine and New Hampshire residents all day. 


The Don Campbell Band will perform at The Silver Spur Dance Club, 272 Lewiston St., at routes 11 and 121 in Mechanic Falls tomorrow from 1-4 p.m. as part of The Country Music Hall of Fame Extravaganza. 


Drop off your jack 'o lantern for the contest, then get spooked on a Halloween Walk at Hobbs Library, 227 Main St. in Lovell on Friday, Oct. 24, from 6-7:30 p.m. Dress in costume and enjoy s'mores around the campfire. 


Shop for winter clothes at the Bethel District Exchange, 279 Walkers Mills Road (Route 26). Open every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9-11 a.m.


A new playgroup called Fun with Friends is underway at the West Parish Congregational Church, 32 Church St., Bethel. Connect your child with others their age on Friday, Oct. 24, from 9-10:30 a.m.
