Dear friends,

Of Maine's four Olympians, two call Bethel home.

At Crossroads Diner, Frank Del Duca Sr. flipped pancakes and French toast in his USA/Del Duca sweatshirt the morning after learning his son had officially qualified for the Olympic bobsled team. The news had come just a day earlier, on Jan. 19, turning an ordinary breakfast shift into a quiet celebration of an extraordinary milestone.

Snowboarder Nathan Pare's Olympic path also runs through to Bethel. His family moved from Farmingdale so he and his sister could attend Gould Academy, now a national pipeline for snowboard cross talent. Pare is one of three recent Gould alumni competing on the Olympic Snowboard Cross team, alongside Brianna Schnorrbusch of New Jersey and Hanna Percy of California.

For Gould snowboard coach Dustin Holzweiss, it all comes down to the breakthroughs along the way. Coaching, he said, is fueled by "the aha moments—learning something new, or being successful. That's what it's all about at the end of the day."
