Collating the articles to include in this week's Maine Dish, I'm distressed to find that almost half of the stories focus on the high price of food in the U.S. and the growing roadblocks disadvantaged Mainers face in putting food on their tables.

A loosely related column published this morning about a small trend of old-fashioned restaurants opening up in Portland reminds me that the rest of us may be seeking comfort, too.  I remember something similar after 9/11, when I was living in New York: a sudden spate of comfort food recipes in magazines paralleled by a rise in familiar, soothing restaurants.

I wish I knew how to neatly wrap up this note, a way to offer solace to struggling or merely anxious Mainers. Still, don't discount the power of food to make us feel at least a little better, even in challenging times.
