“Mainers are incredibly generous and kind and community centered,” said Erin Mooney, executive director of the nonprofit Safe Passage, from her office in Guatemala.

Lifting children out of poverty in Guatemala City, the organization Safe Passage has been supported by Mainers for 25 years, such as retired teachers Becky and Doug Pride, who live in Falmouth and visited the program over 20 years ago.

“It was just remarkable what we saw. Not just what she was doing for the kids, but the hope and the joy that the kids had being part of that program,” said Doug Pride.

"We just felt compelled," said Becky Pride.

Read more about Safe Passage's 25-year history, and the origins of its connection to Maine, below.

In this week's newsletter: Scouts help Falmouth history center, fire department open house, and anticipated faceoffs in local football.

SCOUTS SPRUCE UP FALMOUTH HISTORY SPOT

Falmouth Scout Troop 93 descended on the Falmouth Historical Society Museum on Woods Road over the past two weekends to prep and paint the Research Room and outside steps and ramp.

The project was overseen by Tanish Agnihotri, who will earn his Eagle Scout badge for organizing the event. This is the third time the Eagle Scouts have done work at the museum and the society is grateful for the significant contributions they have made over the past several years.
