This coming weekend is a fun one for Maine newspapers.

Journalists from across the state will gather in South Portland for the Maine Press Association's annual conference and awards ceremony. It's a day filled with sessions discussing changes, challenges and opportunities in the industry.

The big event comes Saturday night, when an awards ceremony recognizes the best journalism from the past year, ranging from the finest in page design to the best investigative stories.

I'm hopeful that The Times Record will get some recognition for the hard work our tiny team has put in throughout the year!

In a rite of fall, folks paddling in giant gourds took to the water off Damariscotta.

Bean Andrenyak of Brunswick has paddled in the regatta for 10 years. She has dressed as a lobster, butterfly and disco queen with hollowed-out gourds decorated to match. This year, she competed as a witch with a curly green wig and pumpkin boat painted black like a cauldron.

Bath is launching a Fit Up Grant Program geared toward helping business owners revamp their storefronts or complete renovations in order to open or change their businesses. It's similar to a program Freeport rolled out in recent years. "This program is about investing in Bath's future," said Bath Development Corporation Chairperson Mandy Reynolds. "It creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, adds dining and retail choices for residents, and helps our downtown stay vibrant and welcoming."

In Harpswell, the Maine Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a house fire that left a 78-year-old man dead Tuesday morning. The fire caused significant damage to the home, particularly to the second floor. Several fire departments from Harpswell, West Bath, the Harpswell islands and Brunswick, and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, also responded to the blaze.

Boomer the border collie decided we were too far away while hanging out on the porch, so he punched a hole in the screen to keep a closer eye on us. He does silly stuff like this sometimes. He has brain damage. That's not me being mean; it's diagnosed. He's a good pup, but not at all coordinated. (Nick McCrea photo) Have a photo you'd like to contribute to Midcoast Now? THE WAY IT WAS IN THE MIDCOAST

Oct. 15, 1915: I'm a sucker for old newspaper adverts, even the questionable ones. This newspaper clipping shows the perils of old-school advertising tactics. This ad, disguised as a newspaper article, provides testimony from people who see astounding results from a fancy compound! My guess is the role of Lydia E. Pinkham's "vegetable compound" in these miraculous recoveries is a bit overstated.

The last line invites readers to write to the company for advice on how to cure their ills. Seeing a doctor (not a company) was probably your best bet in 1915, and it remains so today.
