Happy Monday, Skowhegan!
I love this time of year. With Halloween around the corner, it's fun telling spooky stories around the fire. As a huge family history buff, I love regaling my daughter with
tales from my grandmother about cryptic occurrences around her 19th century childhood home.
There's also nothing like going on a haunted history tour, learning some local lore as the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
Lights Up Productions offers just that. Its second annual Skowhegan Ghost Tour, a walk around historic Water Street, takes place Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 24 and 25. Learn more about it below ... if you dare.
As always, I encourage you to email me with submissions about upcoming events or other community contributions to be included in this newsletter.
Thank you for reading,
— Alex Lear

AROUND TOWN: SAPPI NAMED OUTSTANDING MANUFACTURER
|
 |
The Maine Forest Products Council recently recognized Sappi North America as the organization’s 2025 Outstanding Manufacturer. "This award
reflects the innovation and resilience of our Somerset team, and we are grateful to the ... council for that recognition" Blue Keim, mill manager at Sappi North America’s Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, said in a MFPC news release. "We’ve embraced new technologies, strengthened our safety and environmental performance, and built strong partnerships in the community, all while positioning the mill for long-term growth. It’s proof that when we invest in our people and our future, we can set a new standard for manufacturing in Maine." From left are Patrick Strauch, MFPC director emeritus; Krysta West, MFPC executive director; Ryan McAvoy, region manager, Sappi; Keim; and Chris Fife, MFPC president.

THE WAY IT WAS IN SKOWHEGAN
|
|
|
Oct. 11, 1980: "'When someone says to me, I haven't been able to tell this to anyone else, I know I'm helping someone,' noted Linda Daniels, Somerset County's new victim-witness advocate.
"'I was interested in the field of law, but I left that position because I was really feeling the need to be helping,' she said.
"The mother of four children said she thinks she has found the niche where she can do that - in a job slot she laments is too little understood in Maine."
