Old Orchard Beach was a popular destination on June 23, 2025, as people sought relief from the heat, which saw temperatures in the mid 80s. Take a look at photos of Old Orchard Beach’s summer scene in the 1970s. BUY IMAGE |

How do you beat the heat?
Do you throw on your swimsuit and head to the nearest swimming hole? Or brave the crowds in hopes of scoring an unoccupied spot on the beach? Or would you rather plop down in front of the AC until the temperature becomes bearable?
I wrestled with that very issue this weekend. With so many options and endless places to go, I was suddenly overcome with decision paralysis. I eventually found myself sprawled out on the sand at Dundee Park in Windham.
I admit, it's a good problem to have. It's certainly better than the alternative, which people keep reminding me is not too far away. For now, let's forget about the snow and enjoy this brief period of warmth.
In this month's Lens, we're featuring photos that capture the essence of summer. We hope you enjoy it.
