Sometimes you just crave breakfast food.

Despite it being afternoon as I finalize this newsletter, I'm going to go make myself some scrambled eggs and toast. So, I'll leave you to it: read on for all of this week's news in your communities.

In this week's newsletter: A South Portland school board member resigns; Scarborough's proposed municipal and school budget; an Earth Day Resource Fair and more.

(P.S. We've launched a brand new ePaper product for our Cape-SoPo-Scarborough Now readers! Enjoy your local news in a digital newspaper format. Find it at the bottom of today's newsletter).

MORE NEWS

South Portland School Board member Jennifer Ryan announced her resignation last week. Ryan said “tensions are high” on a number of issues the board has been tackling recently, including the next budget, but her priority right now is family and she is looking forward to serving the community in other ways.

Scarborough’s latest proposed municipal and school budget comes with an estimated 3.5% tax increase. Much of the proposed municipal budget is focused on maintaining services, while the school budget is driven by an increasing need for special education services in the district.

A Scarborough family is leasing Bayley’s Ice Cream on Pine Point Road, which they plan to relaunch as The Maine Scoop Co. later this spring. Ben Sholl, one of the new operators, said the shop will officially open Thursday, May 15. Sholl and his family currently own Mainely Custard in Freeport, which they bought last year.

Emergency crews responded to LongHorn Steakhouse near the Maine Mall on Friday after part of the restaurant’s ceiling collapsed during dinner service, officials said. Employees had noticed ceiling tiles beginning to fall and moved patrons out of the way shortly before the ceiling came down, the city's fire and police departments said. Bystanders also helped some patrons out from under the debris, they said.
