Anyone else get caught in the rain this week? I did, and so did many Mainers across the state on Monday. The 2.25 inches that fell in Rumford at least put a dent in our
extreme drought, the worst in 20 years. We only need about another foot of rain!
Well, if you are soaked again during Wednesday's expected storm, you can make up for it by joining engineer Matt Frost on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 3:30 p.m. at Rumford Public Library, 56 Rumford Ave., to learn all about 3D printing — and even design your own 3D print. This class is for all ages, including adults and teens.
Children's Librarian Sarah Cotnoir had a terrific turnout with Frost on Oct. 9 with children and adults working together on a lesson about structural engineering and bridge building.
The next STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) class will be on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 3:30 p.m. All ages welcome, no sign-up required.
In today's newsletter: See the Witches of 49 Franklin; a community food drive at Ludden Library; and much more.
Thanks for reading,
Bruce Farrin

Poland Spring is scaling back withdrawals at multiple sites this summer as a result of falling groundwater levels. The company said the reductions were voluntary and intended to ensure its pumping remains sustainable. Using National Weather Service and drought forecast tools, the company determined beginning Sept. 1 that there would be a significant reduction at sites.
The Rumford Select Board voted 5-0 Thursday to increase the town's assessed property values for 2025-26 by more than $2 per $1,000 of assessed value. The new rate is $18.73 per $1,000 of valuation. The town Manager George O'Keefe said two-thirds of the increase in the town budget is going to fund Police Department wages.
Thomas Tellier, 55, was sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday for the 2022 murder of his 27-year-old stepson Nicholas Trynor at their home in Mexico. Tellier was found guilty of the killing July 24. Tellier’s attorney, Tina Nadeau, argued that her client wielded a Mossberg 500 pump-action 12-gauge in self defense following an argument with Trynor, who Tellier thought had a knife.
