June 11, 2026

Out and about in Portland this summer, I spotted two social media "celebrities": Boston-based comedian Matt Lyons (of the Instagram account @mattyslyon) at a concert at Thompson's Point and the kid from Recess Therapy who loves Komodo dragons, eating with his family at The Clam Bar.

I'll admit that I get starstruck pretty easily, and I was excited about these sightings. Thanks to my colleagues Ray Routhier and Aimsel Ponti, I now have a crop of 32 Maine influencers to follow — and then look out for IRL.

ON OUR PLATE

Sometime in March is the newest estimated opening date for Maine's first and much-anticipated Aldi grocery store, going into the former Big Lots on Brighton Avenue. Are you already a fan? I'd love if you let me know why.

Second helpings: Salvatore's Hoagie Shop is opening today in the former home of Pizza Joint on Forest Avenue. Meanwhile, Blue Lobster Urban Winery has closed its East Bayside tasting room.

WHAT ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW

Portland distributed — and collected — more needles than ever in 2025

Thanks to the first year of a buyback program, the city saw a collection rate of 86%, its highest since 2022.

🎤 Concert hall debate: A city committee advanced a proposal to expand the buffer between entertainment venues, which would kill the controversial Live Nation project.

🔎 Reviewed anew: A Munjoy Hill affordable housing project, approved in 2024, was sent back to the Historic Preservation Board.

🏆 Back to back: The Grammy Awards dubbed Waynflete grad Amy Allen "songwriter of the year" again.

🏪 Give and take: More than 200 Maine businesses, many in Portland, participated in a nationwide strike Friday in opposition of ICE activity, either by closing their doors or donating their profits.

Expanded effort: A rally accompanying the strike Friday drew more than 1,000 people to Monument Square — one of the largest protests the city has seen in months.

"I think that people are so looking for community and neighborliness."

— Mabel Street resident Rob Chamberlin, who designated his yard a "Pop In Dog Park" to help his goldendoodle get exercise and meet new people — one of several twists that Portland homeowners are putting on the Little Free Library trend.
