We gained another candidate for governor this week, for those keeping score. Republican Jonathan Bush (yes, those Bushes). That's 18, with more possible (likely?).

Bush is an interesting candidate. He has huge name recognition, obviously, and will be able to raise plenty of money. But will Republican primary voters be jazzed about another Bush, especially one who hasn't been a full-time resident all that long? We'll have to see.

Another intriguing candidate emerged this week, although not in the governor's race. Matthew Dunlap formally announced he was challenging U.S. Rep. Jared Golden for the Democratic nomination.

This has been rumored for months and Dunlap, the state's auditor and former secretary of state, made if official. Golden is not exactly beloved by his party (he often votes with Republicans, including during the recent shutdown votes), but has won multiple elections in a challenging district for Democrats. Dunlap is more progressive than Golden but still a traditional Democrat. Personality-wise, they are even further apart.

That will be a closely watched primary. And if it gets messy, whoever wins might come out bruised for the general election against a formidable Republican — former Gov. Paul LePage.

Those elections are still a ways off, but there's less than one month until Election Day 2025. Keep an eye out for more coverage of referendum Questions 1 and 2 in the weeks ahead.
