Someone needs to tell Patrick Dempsey to make his way back to Turner tonight to watch one of the biggest, most anticipated matchups of the football season. Reigning Class C champion Leavitt — where Dempsey visited Friday — and reigning Class A champ Oxford Hills face off for the first time. The Vikings and Hornets are both undefeated, ranked first and second, respectively, in the Varsity Maine poll, and owners of 14-game win streaks.

But let's talk Friday. Week 4 of the football season has been fun so far. Sure, there were still lopsided results, but there also were more back-and-forth, tight finishes than usual. At least in my part of the state. Momentum switched allegiances throughout Mountain Valley and Camden Hills’ matchup before the Windjammers took the lead for good with 1:24 to play. Lewiston scored the final two TDs to beat Bangor, and Gardiner did likewise against Edward Little.

There also were interesting results among the more definitive matchups. Poland improved to 4-0 for the first time in program history by defeating Freeport 22-2. Jonah Barstow ran for 204 yards to help Kennebunk beat Deering 28-6 in a showdown of unbeaten Rams. Thornton is back to playing like Thornton after an 0-2 start, as evidenced by a 37-6 win over previously unbeaten Windham. Lawrence ran for nearly 500 yards against Cony, and Sanford overwhelmed Marshwood.

There also were a few rivalry field hockey contests on Friday. Dirigo overcame Mountain Valley’s stalwart defense to win 1-0, and Cony held off Gardiner 3-2.

In the 1987 summer hit, "Can't Buy Me Love," Ronald Miller (aka Patrick Dempsey) went from "totally geek to totally chic." Near the end of the movie, after losing it all, he said: "Nerds, jocks. My side, your side. It's all bull[roar]. It's hard enough just trying to be yourself."
