Good morning,

"Stop, drop and roll!" Who doesn't remember the age-old lesson from their early school days? I certainly do. I don't recall which grade or even school I was in when introduced to fire prevention and safety but - well - let's just say it's been decades and I never forgot what I learned.

I also remember how earnestly I insisted to my mother after coming home from school during that long-ago Fire Prevention Week we needed to devise a household escape plan in event of fire, complete with a confirmed outside gathering place for all the family.

As I visited Oxford Hills schools this week I looked back on those early lessons and realized that I still think about fire safety. I always make a mental note of the best way to escape a building in a fire and I make sure my smoke alarms have working batteries.

And while it wasn't part of what my classmates and I were made aware of all those years ago, these days I certainly pay attention if my cell phone starts to feel hotter than it should. Lithium battery safety is the theme for Fire Prevention Week this year.

And speaking of fire safety and prevention, Oxford Hills was jolted this week by a blown power transformer along Main Street in South Paris that led to fires at two different locations. About 6,000 Central Maine Power customers in surrounding towns, including at MaineHealth Stephens Hospital, lost service for up to three hours Tuesday afternoon.

The town of West Paris has until Nov. 15 to notify Maine School Administrative District 17 if it intends to reacquire Agnes Gray Elementary School, at a cost of $10,350. A public hearing for residents' input will be held Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at Town Office on Kingsbury Street. A special town meeting to vote whether to retain it as town property has been scheduled for Nov. 8 at Ring Mckeen American Legion Post 151 on Church Street.

Three months after the death of Otisfield's longtime Select Board representative Lenny Adler, voters selected his replacement, Brendan Bedell, during a special election. Adler had prophetically named Bedell as a worthy successor when the two faced off in last June's election. Adler won that election by five votes but passed away less than two weeks later.

Did you know it was founded back in 1923 by the Advertiser Democrat's then-publisher Fred Sanborn?

THE WAY IT WAS IN OXFORD HILLS

Established in Norway during the 1920s, the Weary Club launched to give gentlemen in town a place to meet and share pastimes, such as playing cribbage, smoking, chewing tobacco and conversation. To join one had to commit a one-time membership fee of $25 and demonstrate the ability to “whittle a shaving light enough to float.”

It opened its current clubhouse 99 years ago, although it was moved 50 feet down Main Street around 1971 to make way for a Key Bank expansion.
