At first glance, I thought the proposal to increase fines for parking ban violations made sense as a way to encourage compliance, but hearing the reason Mayor Mark Dion is skeptical made me think again.
In his law enforcement experience, increasing fines is ineffective at changing behavior, the former sheriff said at a recent committee meeting where the proposal advanced. He believes the threat of being towed is a better deterrent.
The fact is that the proposed new fine of $175 has different significance to each person, from a slight bummer to an impossible burden. The inconvenience of having to retrieve your car from an impound lot, however? That's similarly annoying to everyone.
- Until next week,

Two newish Old Port restaurants, Bar Futo and Low Stakes Lodge, announced that they are closing, but the owners of both are making other plans for those spaces.
Second helpings: A new counter-service pizzeria, Fork in the Road, opened in One City Center where Tic Taco was, which also sadly means Tic Taco closed! Glad Redditors are sharing in my grief.
