April 17, 2025

Greetings everyone,

The 250th  anniversary of Patriots' Day is at hand with the 19th of April marking the battles between colonial and British troops at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, in 1775. News of the historic events reached this area in the early hours of April 21, according to the "History of Gorham" by Hugh McLellan, and volunteer, previously organized militias were ready to roll.

A company of patriots from Falmouth first marched out to Boston, according to history book records, followed by a Gorham company under Capt. Hart Williams and another with a militia of Gorham, Standish and Windham volunteers that was led by Capt. Wentworth Stuart of Gorham.

Reaching Wells, they were ordered back to protect the "coastwise towns." McLellan's history doesn't say where the orders came from or who issued them. But the local patriots returned but appeared itching for action.

Check out the history book for yourselves to learn tales of the Gorham patriots serving during the Siege of Boston, Fort Ticonderoga and Valley Forge.

Thanks for reading,

- Bob Lowell
