April 10, 2025

Greetings everyone,

Warmer spring temperatures will be more than welcome as many prepare for outside work in gardens and lawns. Kudos to the Gorham Conservation Commission and Gorham Village Alliance in jointly organizing a spring cleanup on April 27.

Perhaps all residents between now and then could work independently near their homes and businesses to pick up litter all over each community.

April 22 is the annual Earth Day observance with this year's theme,  "Our Power, Our Planet." So, maybe we could individually plant a tree, shrub or some flower bulbs to improve  aesthetics and environments in our communities. "Many hands make light work."

Thanks for reading,

- Bob Lowell

THINGS TO DO

Attend a Gorham budget workshop: The Town Council will review Town Manager Ephrem Paraschak's proposed $23.5 million budget, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 12, in Town Council Chambers at the Municipal Center, 75 South St. The budget is up 4.7% from the current $22.4 million. But the estimated tax rate, without counting the portion of the rate for education, is $3.20, down a dime from the current year, representing a 2.9% drop. The proposed budget can be seen at gorham-me.org and  enter "budget" in the search bar.

Lenten fish suppers conclude Friday: This spring's series of haddock suppers at St. Anne's Church in Gorham, $14, and St. Hyacinth Church in Westbrook, $12, wrap up April 11. The Gorham supper is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Westbrook from 5 to 6 p.m.

Meet the Easter Bunny: The Dorcas Society of Hollis and Buxton is sponsoring an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, on the athletic field at the intersection of routes 112 and 202 in Buxton. The event is for children age 10 and younger and participants are asked to check in early. A separate area will be designated for children age 3 and younger. "Be sure to bring your own baskets or buckets," a Facebook post said and "the Easter Bunny will also be making a special appearance."
