Traveling a little less than a mile typically won’t completely change your weather, but it can if that trip is up the Winthrop Street hill in Augusta during the right conditions.
While I was taking this photo on a cold, clear, and sunny morning at the top of the hill near the Augusta State Airport, it was quite foggy about 300 feet down below in the valley because of the interaction of warmer water in the Kennebec River and cold air. I’d gotten an early start that morning hoping to make standalone weather art shots of the full Harvest Moon setting behind the Maine State House dome around dawn, but the thick fog bank thwarted that idea.
After taking a shot of the moon setting behind trees in Manchester, I looked for more scenic photos in the early morning light. In addition to this shot of the cemetery and fog bank, I also came away with a shot of the State House dome shrouded in fog from the same hilltop.
