Last week during National Library Week, I spoke with local libraries about how cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services from the Trump administration may impact their programs and services.

“It’s an exciting time of year and exciting place to be,” said Falmouth Memorial Library Director Jenna Mayotte. “So that makes it especially difficult with the funding issues that are coming up.”

Read more about how federal funding is distributed through the Maine State Library, and how libraries in your area are considering their future programs.

I love hearing from the local community about what is important to you. Feel free to email me story tips and community events, photos and announcements for a chance to be included in this newsletter.

In this week's newsletter: No Mow May; considerations on artificial turf; and Earth Day celebrations.

THINGS TO DO

Hold the lawnmower: No Mow May is a national campaign that encourages people to refrain from mowing their lawns during the month of May to promote biodiversity and to provide a habitat for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other insects. The town of Falmouth has identified several public properties where we will refrain from mowing during the month of May. Residents may join in by picking up a free No Mow May yard sign at Town Hall while supplies last or reusing their signs from past years.

Mother Earth says Witapehtipon! Let’s be Friends! Join Wolastoqey (Maliseet) educator, author, poet, and artist Mihku Paul accompanied by Maine Audubon educators as we celebrate our Earth at Gisland Farm on April 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Why are trees important? Traditional Indigenous Knowledge tells us that trees are our cousins. The group look to the trees for inspiration as we come together for a trail walk, storytelling, art, and hands-on exploration. This event is best suited for children ages 3–9 and their families, and will take place outdoors rain or shine. Register here
