Hi everyone,

Edith Netter, an author based in Denmark, was at the Windham Historical Society's fall festival to promote her book, "The House on Schumannstrasse 7," a story about how her grandparents survived both World Wars.

Netter's grandmother, Alice Rothschild Netter, originally from Germany, was forced to flee Britain during World War I after her husband was interned. After the Nazis rose to power, Edith Netter's grandfather would be interned again, this time in Dachau for being Jewish. Alice then fled Germany, taking a ship to the United States.

Netter said her book comes with a level of intimacy that was different from other Holocaust narratives. She described the book as a personal story, written in her grandmother's voice and covering her courage, love and loss. She also noted that her book was one of the first to write about the experience of those on the train.

AROUND TOWN

Early voting is open across the Lakes Region for statewide elections on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Residents can request a mail-in ballot, or go to their town offices to vote early.

If passed, Question 1 would make several reforms to Maine's voting system, including requiring Maine voters to present a photo ID before voting and adding restrictions on absentee voting, while Question 2 would allow courts to temporarily prohibit a person from holding dangerous weapons if they are deemed a danger to themselves and others.

Residents of Bridgton will vote on multiple localized ballot questions, as well as contested elections for select board and MSAD 61 director. Meanwhile, Windham residents will be voting in three contested town council races, as well as a contested race for the RSU 14 School Board.
