After years of holding on to my Massachusetts license plates, I finally got my Maine plates this week.

After careful consideration, I decided to go with the standard chickadee plate over other options (the Maine Wildlife and Maine Agriculture ones were up there) as it will be one of the last issued before the new license plates become available next month.

I am looking forward to blending in rather than being mistaken for a tourist everywhere I go.

In this week's newsletter: Scarborough narrows in on two options for a new school solution; the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust prepares for its annual Earth Day cleanup; South Portland announces its Business of the Month and more.

TOP STORY

Scarborough’s School Building Advisory Committee has zeroed in on two options to solve overcrowding in the town’s school system. One option is a unified K-2 school to replace the town's three primary schools, while the other plan would rebuild Eight Corners Primary School and upgrade the remaining two. Both options come with investments in both Wentworth and the middle school.

Congress is considering removing tax exemptions on municipal bonds, a move that local officials say would dramatically raise the cost of borrowing money for projects and increase the burden on taxpayers. South Portland's upcoming proposal to turn the former Mahoney Middle School into a municipal and community campus could cost an additional $32.5 million without tax-exempt federal funding, according to City Manager Scott Morelli.

Final plans are taking shape to repair the Spurwink Bridge, which crosses the Spurwink River along the Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough town line. The bridge is proposed to undergo repairs for surface cracking, rusting and erosion to the bridge’s draining system as well as erosion to the bridge’s foundation. Work would begin in fall 2026 and be finished by summer 2027.

The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust will hold its fifth annual Earth Day Community Clean Up from Saturday, April 19, through Sunday, April 27. There are over a dozen locations community members can register to spiffy up. The land trust rallied over 50 volunteers to participate last year, filling 40 garbage bags by the end of the week.

Scarborough Town Councilor Donald Cushing announced his resignation from the council last week. Elected in November 2023, Cushing will be halfway through his three-year term when his resignation takes effect on May 8. A special election will be held on June 10 to fill his seat, coinciding with the school budget validation referendum.

Bull Moose in South Portland was named April’s Business of the Month by the city’s economic development department. Bull Moose locations will host live music to celebrate Record Store Day on Saturday, April 12, including performances at the South Portland store from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Longhorn Steakhouse at the Maine Mall in South Portland is once again taking to-go orders as crews work to repair the restaurant following a roof collapse on March 28. While the dining room will remain closed, Longhorn Steakhouse resumed operations on Monday to begin taking online orders.
