October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a national campaign to raise awareness about domestic violence, support survivors, and unite allies to end
intimate partner violence.
The month is dedicated to educating people about the forms of abuse, honoring victims and survivors, and promoting resources such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-SAFE).
A national day of action, called Purple Thursday, is Oct. 16, when people wear purple to raise awareness and support survivors in an effort to end domestic violence.
In today's newsletter: Remembrance Walk on Sunday; Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee in Peru; and more.

The 13th annual Safe Voices Walk to end Domestic Violence was held in Rumford on Oct. 8, with members from the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition senior walking program trekking on a brisk late afternoon from Hosmer Field to the American Legion and back. The message is to let members of our community know that people care about them and that there are resources here for families affected by
domestic violence. (Bruce Farrin/Staff Writer).

The Mexico Fire Department has received a $152,380 federal grant to replace 16 of 19 old air packs, said Town Manager Jack Gaudet. The money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency funds “critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel, enhance efficiencies and support community resilience,” according to FEMA.
The Mexico Select Board voted unanimously Oct. 7 to take $150,000 from undesignated funds to offset taxes for 2025-26. Town Manager Jack Gaudet said the property tax rate for 2025-26 is $29.40 per $1,000 of assessed value, up slightly from $29 last year. He said without the $150,000, the rate would have been $30.70.
