Hi reader,

Welcome to the new Maine Trust Insider newsletter.

As a supporter of our work, you’ll hear from one of our newsroom or company leaders every Saturday morning about what’s happening behind the scenes at the Maine Trust for Local News, including the Portland Press Herald, Sun Journal and Central Maine newsrooms. This replaces the weekly Editor’s Picks newsletter you may have been receiving.

One year in Maine

I’ve served as the executive editor of the Maine Trust and its various publications for one year. That means I’ve lived through all four of Maine’s seasons. I’ve loved every one of them (though I now understand why so many say “just wait until summer”).

A few observations:

It stays green all year. This may seem silly to lifelong Mainers, but if you’ve lived in states south of here with winter you know the majority of trees go bare for at least three months. Maine’s pines are a clear standout, never looking sad or disappointing us.

Mainers are the best drivers. I’ve traveled back and forth across the U.S. four times and lived in seven states as well as D.C. This is the best state to drive in, even with its winters and somewhat treacherous roads. Why? You all know how to drive.

The people who are working to sustain local journalism in Maine are wonderful. I’ve been continually impressed by my hardworking colleagues, who all care deeply about our mission.

I feel lucky to live and work in this state, and I look forward to all I have to learn and experience in year two.

A few items of note

If you frequent our websites, you’ll find a new tab at the top of the page: Your Town News. Here you’ll find a search bar and a list of most of the towns we cover in southern Maine, western Maine and central Maine.

The 2025 election is underway. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4. Go to these pages for all of our latest coverage: Press Herald, Sun Journal and Central Maine.

This year’s Mainers To Be Thankful For has a theme: school workers. Nominate a teacher, principal, ed tech or coach who has made a difference in your life or community. We’ve extended the deadline for submissions to Monday, Oct. 20.

CENTRAL MAINE
PRESS HERALD
SUN JOURNAL

Come see a journalism legend (and me!)

On Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., New York Times Senior Editor Rebecca Corbett will join me on stage at One Longfellow Square for my first Maine Voices Live.

Among many impressive feats, Rebecca served as the editor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Harvey Weinstein investigation, and is featured heavily in the book written by the two reporters, "She Said." (She was played by Patricia Clarkson in the movie!)

But what you probably didn’t know is that Rebecca started her journalism career in Maine at the Morning Sentinel. We’ll talk about her time here (she married a Mainer!), her experience editing some of the biggest stories of the century and her new role helping local journalists around the country.

Get tickets here. As thanks for your support, use code PPHSUB to attend for free. I hope to see you there.

Thanks for reading and supporting local news,

Carolyn Fox
