AUGUSTA — Old Fort Western plans to host a Family Harvest Day celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 at 16 Cony St.
Harvest Days were when people came together to celebrate the coming of the harvest, particularly in good years. It was a chance for them to socialize before the long winter, according to a news release from Linda Novak at the fort.
There will be period games such as Shut-the-Box, Aunt Sally, Jackstones, marbles, Quoits, Spillikin and tic tac toe. There will be cider pressing and corn husk doll making.
Kids or parents can have their loved ones placed in the pillory, and those in the pillory can pay the fine to be released.
There will be a dessert café where one can enjoy a baked good or treat while overlooking the Kennebec River and the downtown area. The café and picnic tables will be set up on the lawn south of the Fort. Cider, mulled cider, coffee and tea will be available.
All funds raised will be used to support Old Fort Western’s educational programming.
For this event, families of four (two adults and two children) can come at a reduced fee of $30. People can take a tour of the fort and learn about the long history of Fort Western.
